JULIE GOODYEAR / STAN & HIDALA OGDEN / JACK DIAMOND

Towards the end of 1971, I knew a well known Northern comedian called Jack Diamond. This guy was very funny and people from all over the country to see him by the coachloads to see appearing in the nightclub of The Norbreck Castle Hotel  on the Queens Promenade Blackpool. I worked for Jack for a good while and there were some great times and some bad times> Jack lived in one of the Hotel Suites for a few years as the resident comedian and we only had the best food and drink including Champagne. I had a house in Banks Street Blackpool which was about 15 minutes from the Norbreck Hotel, but not there often. They were some fantastic days I have known. Jack made an LP as part of his act supported by the Colin Prince Trio. I still have a copy at home. I absolutely loved the shows; it reminded me of the times I spent in the Theatre Royal backstage in HYDE. There were many famous stars appearing in the various venue`s in and around Blackpool and came to see Jack in the nightclub and then some were invited up to Jack`s suite and we had some great nights conversing with all the stars in Jack`s suite. On one occasion a well dressed guy came into Jack`s suite with wavy hair uninvited, he spoke with a London accent but none of us had ever met him before, he helped himself to a drink then said that he was the owner of the Norbreck Castle Hotel and Nightclub. He seemed to be an ignorant guy and did not recognise Julie Goodyear sat there, a little while longer he insulted Julie Goodyear by asking her "if she was a person of the night"  Bet Lynch in typical style told him to "F--- Off". He muttered something about he cant find anyone here and walked out.  My friend Julie, Jack and I were talking for a while and the Julie was taken home by Taxi back to her farm in Heywood, Lancashire.  On another night in 1972, Julie, Jack and myself were having a few drinks, then Julie and Jack suddenly said to me  we are going to become engaged and would I take care of the announcements  to the TV and Press. Of course the next day I contacted the national newspapers and and the TV,  I made sure that I contacted the press office at Granada TV Studios first because Julie was under contract with them. A day or two later Interviews were set up at the Norbreck Hotel and to take pictures e.t.c. Then there were huge stories in all the newspapers and on TV. I can`t remember when,  but several weeks later, one Sunday night Julie and Jack  had arranged for someone special to come and announce their engagement at the Nightclub in what would be a very surprised nightclub audience. Jack Diamond had just finished his act when suddenly Bet Lynch - Julie Goodyear came out onto the stage to tumultuous applause. Jack told the audience there was another surprise soon, but Nobody left.  a few minutes later I went to the front door to greet the special friend who was due to arrive from Manchester. I already knew him and his lady wife; it was Stanley Ogden from Coronation Street. I greeted them, but of course they did not recognise me as the last time they saw me was when I was about 12/13 in HYDE.  I said to them both " I am here to escort you to the stage, but it is so good to see you both again" They looked quite puzzled so I said "You may recall many years ago, you came to perform at the Theatre Royal in HYDE CHESHIRE,  for several weeks", "You stayed in our house while you looked for somewhere a little more permanent". " I also played with your two children sometimes" . They were very surprised and said to me "yes, they remember us all very well". There was some private conversation and then I led them towards the stage.  I caught Jack`s eye and then Jack and Julie walked out into the stage area again to very excited audience. Then they both announced that their guest was no other than "Stanley Ogden of Coronation Street. The crowd went absolutely wild. Stan came on and  said "how long he been putting up with his wife Hilda" then looking around furtively said " Blimy, she`s not here is she,". He then spoke of his friendship with Bet acting in "Coronation Street" over many years and that he was very happy to travel from his home in Manchester to be there for the announcement.
